Finding Us

The Kozai gallery is located in the South Granville gallery area of Vancouver – on West 6th Avenue, a half-block west of Granville Street, just south of the Granville Street Bridge. We are a 5-10 minute drive from downtown Vancouver and approximately 15 minutes from the Vancouver International Airport.

Who We Are

Kozai Designs Inc was established in 2003 by Ron Cromie, a long-time resident of Japan and China with an even longer time fascination with furniture and furniture making.

He is partnered by Hideki Shimizu who has a background in fine arts and a passion for design, and has lived in Tokyo, London and Vancouver.

We are supported by our principal workshops in Japan, especially Takumi Kohgei in Asahikawa Japan. Other Japanese furniture and lighting workshops are spread throughout the country, often located in smaller towns or the countryside.

Our designers, both in Japan and in Vancouver, design from a thorough understanding of material and craft. They keep their designs simple – less is more – and are totally focused on end use. See their bios under their respective products.

In the months ahead, we look forward to introducing additional Japanese and Canadian artisans who work in the modern organic genre.

The Kozai Name

The Kozai (kou-zai) name, written in Japanese kanji, means literally hard material and is a technical term used by Japanese woodworkers to designate hardwoods, particularly solid hardwoods.

Architects & Interior Designers

We welcome contract orders from accredited interior design and architectural firms. On the lighting side we have worked with designers to some of the world’s leading luxury hotel groups.

Logistics

We accept major credit cards and ship throughout North America, as well as to other countries overseas.

Smaller items, such as lights, are normally shipped via Fedex Ground, larger items by licensed freight carriers. Where cost and time effective, larger orders of Japanese items can be shipped directly from Japan to the project site.
